AVID is a class for students in the middle who want to go to college. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.2. Generally, students who maintain a GPA higher than 3.5 don't need to stay in AVID, but often do anyway. The AVID class is also specifically designated for students who are members of groups under represented in colllege. The mission of the class is to get students into a 4-year university. In order to do this students are taught to take Cornell notes in each academic class. Additional writing lessons and math practice lessons are also done in the AVID classroom. Students have the added benefit of a weekly (or more) tutorial with college age tutors. Field trips are scheduled, both to colleges and cultural events. Community service is required of students and they are asked to practice the high stakes testing needed for college entrance. Help is given on college applications, scholarship applications and the FAFSA.
