Description

Welcome to an exciting year of AP Bio! The workload will be demanding, but shouldn't overwhelm you IF you stay on top of assignments. Rule of thumb: for every hour you spend in class, you should devote two hours outside of class studying. We'll also have many islands of fun during our year of discovering the wonders of biology (AP babies, Darwin's birthday party, DNA Day!).

Due first day back from spring break

Due:

Assignment

Write an explanation of what RNAi is and what it does. Compare/contrast functions of RNAi to those of mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA.

Useful links:

Epigenetics, Imprinting and Barr body formation all involve some form of nucleosome modification mediated by RNAi

Here is an excellent review.

I found this paper particularly fascinating

Intersection of the RNA Interference and X-Inactivation Pathways

Here is another

siRNA induced transcriptional gene silencing in mammalian cells.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15684610

I draw your attention to the importance of RNAi as a “gene silencer” for so-called individual oncogenes such as myc.

Promoter-specific transcriptional interference and c-myc gene silencing by siRNAs in human cells.

Due:

Assignment

Epigenetics homework. Review all links, use info from "Ghost in the Genes" video.

DO NOT SUBMIT ONLINE! THAT LINK DOES NOT COME TO ME! PRINT OUT THE COMPLETED FORM, OR HAND WRITE THE ANSWERS & TURN IN TO CLASS BASKET!

Due:

Assignment

There are three parts to this assignment, plus Biozone work, so tackle it a little each day - DON'T wait until the last minute!

Due:

Assignment

Powerpoint notes for both Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic gene control. Use as a reference/resource as you study this information. It will NOT be collected.

Due:

Assignment

Mitosis Powerpoint presentation of Mitosis notes. We started but ran out of time. Go through on your own & bring any questions to class.

Due:

Assignment

Meiosis Powerpoint presentation for Meiosis notes. We started but ran out of time. Go through on your own & bring any questions to class.

Due:

Assignment

Information Unit, Introduction to Mendelian Genetics

Due:

Assignment

Mitosis/Meiosis take home test (paper copy from class)

Mitosis and Meiosis "study guides", with links to Prezis and videos provided for reference only - I will not be collecting anything other than the test itself.

Due:

Assignment

Information unit, Part 2 - Central Dogma
(uses Biozone, volume I)

Due:

Assignment

Information unit, part 1 - Introduction to DNA

Due:

Assignment

Energy unit, part 6: Nutrition
Biozone section is LONG. Advise you to tackle a couple of pages/day

Due:

Assignment

Energy unit: Part 5 - Chemoheterotrophic Nutrition (cellular respiration)

Due:

Assignment

Energy unit, Part 3 - Enzymes and Part 4 - Photoautotrophic Nutrition

Due:

Assignment

Energy unit, Part 2: Metabolic Strategies

Due:

Assignment

Energy Unit, Part 1 - Bioenergetic Theory

Due:

Assignment

Overview of cells - a review

Due:

Assignment

Unit Three, Parts 3 & 4: work in study groups; always answer questions with COMPLETE sentences. You will have class time on 10/29 & 10/31 to work on these.

Biodiversity FRQ (handed out in class) is also due on Monday.

This is the end of our unit on Biodiversity.

Due:

Assignment

Due:

Assignment

Quick review of classification. Biozone is extra easy this time, mostly read/highlight.

**Since I didn't return the Biozone books I have in time, those of you who have NOT turned in your book can expect to be the individuals selected on Friday.

Due:

Assignment

Unit Two, Parts 5 & 6 - work on in class, finish for homework.

Due:

Assignment

Unit two, Part four: Measuring Evolution
Don't forget to do the Biozone pages as well

Due:

Assignment

Unit two, Part three: Evidence of Evolution
Don't forget the Biozone pages

Be careful what websites you use to explore intelligent design. You want an balanced view. Stay away from the Discovery Institute - they are a religious organization that is trying to replace the science of evolution with a creationist belief system (not necessarily wrong, but certainly not science). The two sites below seem to give a measured presentation of the topic.

Due:

Assignment

Read linked article about hybrid sharks. Answer the five questions at the end. Use the embedded links to ensure complete understanding.

Due:

Assignment

Unit two, part 2 - Evolutionary Forces. Don't forget to do the appropriate pages in the Biozone book.

Due:

Assignment

Unit two (Evolution), part 1: Natural Selection

Due:

Assignment

Part 2: Proteins & Nucleic Acids
Biozone, pages 15-21

Due:

Assignment

Part 1: Background, Carbohydrates, & Lipids
Biozone pages 22-26, 28

Due:

Assignment

Complete the FRQ in essay form. Outline form is not acceptable. Labeled diagrams may be used to supplement discussion, but in no case will a diagram alone suffice. It is important that you read the questions completely before you begin to write.

Due:

Assignment

Unit 1.2 Part one: Chemistry: due date Tuesday, 8/27. We'll cover the chemistry of water and carbon next, so feel free to work ahead if you have the time/inclination.

Due:

Assignment

Unit One Intro = informational Prezi, focus questions, supplemental videos. Answer all questions in depth. Come to class with questions - address and/all points of confusion EARLY. Due Friday, 8/23.
