Due:

Assignment

Rewrite your paper. Look over the notes from today about how to improve your claims.
If you strengthen your claim, your paper will change. Your paper will change, because your claim has changed; your claim has become more specific. So don't just change the claim and resubmit the paper--you will probably not be satisfied with the grade you receive.
If you have to rewrite, your current grade on this paper is a "F;" that "F" grade will be replaced -- not averaged-- with the new grade.
When you turn your rewrite in--you MUST turn in the draft that you got back today.
I will give you a new rubric to attach. The whole pile will get pretty thick.

You will have a paper to rewrite on Tuesday night. Make plans accordingly.

Emily, Alexis, Lauren, Lillian, Anicia, Nancy, Samuel and Jessica have already done a book talk for SSR Book #2!!!! Nice job!

Due:

Assignment

I hope you learned a lot in class today from reviewing the model response and breaking the model down into pieces.
You need to think structurally when you assess your final draft. You need to ask yourself: "do I have all the 'parts' I need?"

Please rewrite the response that you wrote for class today: remember, your response must begin with a strong, articulate claim. A good claim will answer the question how? or why? A good claim will be very specific. A good claim never has the word "it" in it.

These are good claims:

“But what if she should die? She won’t die. But what if she should die? She won’t. She’s all right. But what if she should die? She can’t die. But what if she should die? Hey, what about that? What if she should die?” (321).

Claim: This passage is significant, because the repetition of the phrase "but what if" signals that Frederic Henry is starting to completely lose control and panic.

“Catherine looked at me and smiled. I bent down over the bed and started to cry” (330).

Claim: Frederic Henry's bent back signals that Catherine's death will break him. The fact that Frederic begins to cry confirms this fact.
Nota bene: "If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good, and the very gentle, and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too, but there will be no special hurry (249).

"There was a woman at the desk who wrote down Catherine’s name, age, address, relatives and religion, in a book. She said she had no religion and the woman drew a line in the space after that word. She gave her name as Catherine Henry” (313).

Claim: This passage is significant, because through this seemingly simple hospital registration, Catherine symbolically marries Frederic Henry and proclaims her profound love for him.

Nota bene: C.B. loves F.H. the way the priest loves God.

See below for an electronic copy of the model response (including the "labeled" version) as well as another copy of the rubric that will be used to assess your paper.

Due:

Assignment

Write a rich, 300-plus word, formal response in which you explain why the passage you chose (from the eleven significant passages from chapter 41--see notes below) is significant.

This assignment will “go” in the essay/test portion of your grade (45%).
Type or don’t type—I don’t care, but if you don’t type it, your work must be legible. (If typed—DOUBLE SPACE!!!)
Remember: we are practicing--the hardest you work at your writing--the better you will be at writing. (See the complete rubric below.)

I also included the typed up notes and models from class that discuss how to write about key words.

Remember, in an “A” response:
  • The writer makes a reasonable claim about the significance of the passage.
  • The writer also discusses this claim.
  • The writer provides context for the passage.
  • The writer restates the most important parts of the passage that he uses as direct textual evidence.
  • The writer focuses in on a key word and discusses how that word creates meaning.
  • The writer has carefully edited the piece: there are no spelling mistakes; the writer has not used “you;” the writer doesn’t use “it” and “this” alone instead of being specific; the writer has paid attention to the proper use of punctuation; the writer’s sentences make sense, etc.

Due:

Assignment

1. Prepare four of the remaining ten passages from the notes from chapter 41 of A Farewell to Arms; take notes about the context, the significance and the key word--take notes as if you were planning to write a formal response.
See below for an electronic copy.

2. Read in your SSR book--book #2 is due on 4 November 2011.

Due:

Assignment

  • Come to class prepared to write a very rich, analytical response to the prompt you received in class. (See below for an electronic copy.)
  • You will be using the school computers to type this draft. Make sure that you can log on.
  • You may only use NOTES to help you write--you may not simply type up a rough draft that you write at home.
Also--study the notes on chapters 33-37 from A Farewell to Arms--yep, that means you will be tested in these notes too....

Due:
