Term
2009-2010 School Year
Department
Science
Location
Room 213
Description
Chemistry

Text •  Chemistry by Myers, Oldham and Tocci
Course Goal • To provide students with a foundation of scientific theory and practical laboratory methods in the field of chemistry.

Prerequisites • Completion, with a C or better, of Algebra I

Course Requirements • a) Completion of all course units of general chemistry.
    b) Satisfactory completion of class assignments and homework assignments, laboratory experiments, quizzes, unit tests, and final examinations.

Grading •  Grades are awarded based on the degree of fulfillment of the course requirements.
Grades are cumulative during the course of the semester.
• Grading is not on a curve.

90% - 100%     = A
80% - 89%       = B
70% - 79%       = C
60 % - 69%      = D
Below 60%      = F

Grade points may be earned through completion of course assignments, quizzes, and tests.
The final semester grade assigned will be based on cummulative scores.
Any student having a 93% grade average on the Thursday before finals will not be required to take the final.
No extra credit will be given.

Classwork •  Classwork assignments are assigned on a daily basis. Classwork not turned on the day it is due will not be graded.  Generally, classwork is due the day it is assigned.  If assigned as homework, work is due at the beginning of the next class.  It is not recommended that you miss class, as it is extremely difficult to make up work. You must make up all work on the following day as well as doing the assignments for that day.  Only those students with excused absences may make up work.
Late classwork will not be accepted.

Class work will comprise about 25% of the total grade.

Notebooks • Each student is required to maintain a science notebook of his/her completed class assignments, tests, reference pages, and lecture-discussion notes.  The notebook must be neat and well organized with a minimum of 5 dividers.  Unorganized notebooks will not be graded.  The portfolios will be checked regularly and will account for 10% of the total grade.

Attendance Policy •  All tardies and absences will be reported.  Too many tardies will result in an attendance referral. Too many absences or tardies and you will be dropped from the class.

Discipline •  General chemistry is a college preparatory course.  Students will be expected to follow all class (see rules page) and school rules.  Disciplinary actions will be carried out according to the table in the Student Handbook.  In most cases, a student disrupting class will be warned or assigned detention. A second disciplinary problem will result in a phone call to the student’s parent as well as detention.  A third problem will result in a referral to the office with one strike as well as a parent/teacher conference.
