Here are some of the slides that we reviewed on Saturday.

Alina--I made up six multiple choice practice tests. Yes, I am compulsive. I sourced the images so that everyone could practice the slide-based multiple choice questions.
But, I think this year, you will all get your own individual pictures. It is a first this year, so I don't know what that will be like.....
So on Monday, we will practice the multiple choice questions.

See below as well for a link to the AP College Board website. You can check out practice response questions. The multiple choice questions come first and then there are usually nine questions. Seven of the nine are short answer. The trick is to make sure that you ANSWER THE QUESTION that is being asked. Don't just explain what you know. Focus your answer. For short answer questions you are given slides.

Don't forget, we will watch another documentary on Friday--3:00 until 4:20 p.m.--I am thinking Maya Lin --the Vietnam Memorial--so that you will have one more contemporary artist under your belt.
The documentary we will watch got an academy award, so it is supposed to be really, really good!

You have Christo, you will have Wyeth, and you would have Maya Lin: an installation artist, a sculptor (?), and a painter.

Due:

Assignment

Read chapter four--Aegean Art--in Stokstad for Thursday's class. 20 pages
Skim it.....if you don't have much time make sure you have read about Egypt (chpater three) or start reading about about Ancient Greece--chapter five. I am scared to tell you that this chapter is seventy pages long...but there are alot of pictures...so it is really only 45 or less pages of text..the pictures are HUGE...I promise you!

Don't give up! Keep reading........

Due:

Assignment

Hooray!!!

See below for the two different powerpoint projects you put together....some are simply magnificent! Well done!

Thank you Alec for all your help with the Mediums presentation.....don't worry, you got a lot of bonus points, I added them where I figure you want them! Come and ask...

If there is a slide that has your name and "Technical Difficulties" or "Missing" you need to come and see me ASAP. It is probably my fault, but I will need to be rescued...

Due:

Assignment

1.Read chapter one in Stokstad. You don't have to take notes. Read it.
You will read chapter two for Friday. (I hate this pressure stuff.....it is simply no fun.)

2. Check out the slides below. We are going to have a very serious discussion about abstraction/landscape and relevant ...isms....
Be ready to take lots of notes...I plan on being articulate and just plain smart.
I'm serious..the slides are really cool. If you disagree--don't tell me. They took about five hours.

3. Alec...I need to get the mediums from you to review and post. It is my fault and not yours....I take ALL the blame.

Due:

Assignment

1. See below for the ..Ism assignment for Spring Break.
The first slide has everyone's asignment.
Please email your finished work to me....

2. Also, I dropped in the slides from the quiz you took on Wednesday in class. Please review.

3. Finally, I dropped in the slides that we used for our extra credit "game" on Friday....

4. And I think I put some more slides in just for "fun."

Please review the slides...all the slides...it is not too early to start reviewing for the test.
And don't forget to be jealous of Brittney who will be at the Met in NYC this break.....I for one am soooooo jealous. Brittny, have fun! I am so excited for you....

Due:

Assignment

1. Read pages 1102 to the end of chapter 28 in Stokstad.
If you are going to miss class on Friday, you must turn in the notes before you take off for Spring Break.

2. You will have a project to complete over break.....the assignment sheet will be handed in class on Friday...make sure you get it before you disappear....if all else fails, check the website for your personal, special assignement.....

Due:

Assignment

1. Read pages 1083-1102 in Stokstad (stop at Surrealism).
Take notes.

2. Read, hightlight, and annotate article "Cubism" by Robert Rosenblum.
I will check for annotations.
This article will be the basis of an EXTRA CREDIT Socratic Seminar on Friday.

3. In class on Wednesday, there will be an essay test. If you plan to be absent, you will need to make up the test before Friday at 7:30 a.m.

Due:

Assignment

1. Read and take notes on pages 1072-1084 in Stokstad. This assignment is about nine solid pages. This section focuses on cubism.

2. You may rewrite one of the three paragraphs you wrote in class on 10 March 2010.
They are worth 40 points. See below for the slides.

Assignment

Don't forget your permission slip--TURN IT IN TO ME ON MONDAY FIRST THING!!!!

1. If you were not in class or had to leave early, please get the notes about Homer's The Veteran in a New Field from a classmate.
See the slide that I downloaded below.
Remember, the purpose of the notes was to think about how we can wed--or connect--visual analysis and historical context. We read the painting powerfully by using both approaches...

2. Read pages 1058 to 1072 in Stokstad. Take Cornell notes. This assignment is really only about six pages or less.

3. Read the handout on Rodin--highlight sections that matter to you.
In class, I will ask people to share a passage that was significant to them (read it aloud) and ask the person to comment on it.
I made slides for you to review after you read the article.
See below....
Also, there is a really, really wonderful film about Camille Claudel. But it is French (with subtitles) and it is rated "R," so if you watch it, make sure you have someone's permission...but the film is truly beautiful and helps you understand what it feels like to be a sculptor...

4. Also, I need a volunteer who--for extra credit--would be willing to stitch together all the medium presentations into an organic whole...for some reason Blake comes to mind but is anyone else interested? We can negotiate about how much extra credit....don't worry, I'll be fair.

Due:

Assignment

The quiz from Monday and the ANSWERS is below.
This file is a great one to study from.....

Due:

Assignment

1. If you missed the 95 slide quiz, you must take it before the end of the day Tuesday.
I don't know...work it out and get in to my room.....maybe during AVID?
Juan--who knows...?

2. How could you tell if the work belongs to.....
Romanticism
Neoclassicism
naturalism
Realism
Impressionism
Post-Impressionism
Symbolism
Expressionism
a modernist work

I will need an answer on Wednesday and perhaps even a good example from memory: Artist, Title, Date.

3. I plan to download the quiz slides from Monday's class on Tuesday at 2:34 p.m.
Review them.....

4. I downloaded the Slides with Claims and another Slides with More Claims file....hmmmm......feels like quiz material.....

5. Keep studying.....and by the way: as of today, I have now decided that I would like to be the woman in Repose by Sargent...but I don't think that is EVER going to happen for lots of reasons....I wish that painting was the best representation of my self but right now I feel like a 12 inch by 12 inch square of one of Seurat's pointillist works--just a bunch of crazy dots and hatches....keep thinking about what piece of art you "are".....if you tell me verbally, I might give you a couple of points extra credit...but only if you make sense....

Due:

Assignment

1. Read chapter 29 in Gardner. Work on the review "packet."
2. You are responsible for all the artists in Chapter 27 of Stokstad. You need to be able to identify their works. You will need to know the titles of major works of art from Stockstad.
3. There will be a quiz in class on Monday first thing.

Due:

Assignment

1. Read chapter 29 in Gardner.

2. Check out the slides I have attached. I added more information to the sldies from Tuesday 2 March 2010's class. I think they may now be more useful for study....

Due:

Assignment

See below for what you need for the MEDIUM PRESENTATION SLIDES.

See below for the stuff people emailed me about their medium.

Check the big document called Medium Notes Project if you turned yours in right away and used a normal wordprocessing program. Check the smaller docuemtns if you were late and/or used an "open" program (that I couldn't open...how ironic!!!).

Also, this template may me think about an another after AP Test project. We need to make reliquaries. But I thought everyone could also make a simple slide show: your favorite work of art and why and the work of art that best represents you.

(Alec Torres says that after the AP test he will probably choose The Death of Marat to represent him because after taking all those AP tests he will feel like he is about to die from exhaustion--I told him that I thought he should instead choose David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps --poise under tremendous stress. He said I was just trying to flatter him.....And I think I would choose Giotto's Meeting at the Gates to represent me; I wish I could say David's Madame Recamier and keep a straight face but honestly, I have never been that cool. I want to be "all fun" like Fragonard's The Love Letter but I think my life is more like Millet's The Gleaners...and when I knit I do feel like Ninga's Monk Sewing.....I just realized that Ms. Watts is like Delauney's Homage to Bleriot (see page 1079) and Gabe is like Bronzino's Portrait of a Young Men (but only after he scores a goal).....I could keep going but I have stuff I need to do....and if you followed even some of the above silliness, you HAVE LEARNED A LOT OF ART!!! And I am very proud of you! And now I am going to keep thinking of peieces of art for all of you until my head EXPLODES...I can't stop myself.....I think Ms. Rivera may be just like Flora in Boticelli's Primavera....Flora is the one with the pretty dress who is passing out flowers....)

Work on the notes that were due today: I will collect them on Tuesday--no backsies--pages 1030 to the end in Stokstad.

Also--I think we need to do the mediums as a powerpoint presentation so that people can study from them with the images handy....we'll discuss how that could happen. Maybe you all could make that happen while I am gone next Thursday....hmmmmmm....do you know how to use powerpoint? Hmmm....

Hang in there!
We are all worn out! But art is beautiful....

Due:

Assignment

Ms. Watts asked for a Socratic Seminar of sorts.
Okay. We will try tomorrow during class.
I have prepared images.

It should follow the format in the attachment below.
I plan on pasting all of these little bits together, so that we can have some good notes.

2. I will be checking your notes pages 978-1009 in class on Wednesday while you take the test. Have them ready to go!

3. On Thursday, 18 February 2010 from 3:00 until 4:00 I will be showing a video that relates to chapter 27 for enrichment and extra credit. You will study while watching. You will take notes.

Due:

Assignment

Continue studying chapter 26.
Review the slides from today's (Monday, 1 February 2010) class. See below. I added more notes.

Neoclassicism and history painting are coming up.....a wonderful antidote to Rococo!

Supplement your book knowledge with visual knowledge…

Marie Antoinette (2006) PG-13 Sofia Coppola directs a stylized portrait of Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst), the naive Austrian princess who married Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman) to become queen of France at age 19. The film explores the effects of a luxurious yet terribly confining lifestyle on the young queen. Her resulting youthful indiscretion and frivolity ultimately led to her undoing. A Cannes Golden Palm nominee, this biopic also took Oscar honors for costume design.
That’s the only one I can recommend….the others are rated “R”…..

Between 900 and 1100 Chinese painters created landscapes that "depicted the vastness and multiplicity" of creation itself. Viewers of these works are meant to identify with a human figure in the painting, allowing them to "walk through, ramble, or dwell" in the landscape.

Hmmm.........interesting.....

The Art of Illumination: The Limbourg Brothers and the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry
March 2, 2010–June 13, 2010
Robert Lehman Wing

The Belles Heures (1405–1408/9) of Jean de Berry, a treasure of The Cloisters collection, is one of the most celebrated and lavishly illustrated manuscripts in this country. Because it is currently unbound, it is possible to exhibit all of its illuminated pages as individual leaves, a unique opportunity never to be repeated. The exhibition will elucidate the manuscript, its artists—the young Franco-Netherlandish Limbourg Brothers—and its patron, Jean de France, duc de Berry. A select group of precious objects from the same early fifteenth-century courtly milieu will place the manuscript in the context of the patronage of Jean de Berry and his royal family, the Valois.

Good study aides for the AP test in May....

Due:

Assignment

Here are the slides wit the answers--Enjoy!
Also--see ALL the slides from the previous assignment--the one for 8 December 2009. You may have ignored them....

I spoke at left with my favorite statistician--Mr. Keller. He and I decided that an 80 out of 109 should be considered a perfect score on the Slide Identification Test for chapters 17, 18, 19.

Think about what you knew and what you did not. Use that information to focus your studying. Also, think about whom I OBVIOUSLY love: Bruegel, Vermeer, and Francesca.
You will see them again.

Thursday's big writing exam will be in 202 on the computers. Meet me there.
You will be writing--like the writing we have been practicing in class.
You will have some choices. Probably you will have to complete four out of six--something like that--so that you can choose what you will do "best" on....
I would look over all those notes I have been passing out to you to work on....you may have just ignored them since I don't collect them, but you do so at your peril.

And finally, BLOOD DONATION FATIGUE IS NOT A LEGITIMATE EXCUSE TO MISS THE EXAM ON THURSDAY.....
You could always donate on your own time over holiday break.....Yes, Juan...I feel like a wicked, wicked witch....but honestly, please take a pass on this round....

Due:

Assignment

Part Two of the Chapter 17, 18, 19 unit test will be on Thursday--in room 202. So make sure that you can log onto the computer.

Spend the weekend studying claims.
Spend the weekend thinking about comparisons.
Spend the weekend reviewing slide comparisons.
Start with what I have loaded on this website right now.
I will try to make some more study comparisons this weekend. But there is PLENTY to start with.

On Tuesday in class, we will go over the slide identification quiz--why? Because by going over the slides with the "answers,"" you will get another chance to review.
And the final will be chapters 14-19--six chapters and a lot of art. So, going over the slides for 17-19 will help; there will not be too many new pieces from 17-19. A couple--but not many.

Due:

Assignment

1. There were VERY important notes today in class about "How light is used." If you were absent make sure that you get them.
If you were present, reread what you took notes on. I promise--it will make a HUGE difference.

2. Complete the notes on the Baroque period. I am not kidding. The notes are extensive and will give you an excellent preview of what the final exam will "feel" like.
You are responsible for all the images listed in these notes.
Not for other images in the text in Stostad chapter 19.

3. If you were absent, you missed a quiz which you need to make up before class on Wednesday.

4. Important SLIDE IDENTIFICATION test on chapters 17-19 on Friday.
Title
Artist
Period: Early Renaissance, Late Renaissance, Baroque
Medium

There will be tons of extra credit slides (perhaps some from earlier chapters), so the more you study, the better your grade will come out in the end. You have a chance to really get yourself into a good position going into the final examination. Start studying today!
And of course, you should have been studying the images all along.....

Due:

Assignment

See the notes below for the Baroque Period.
By now you should have read the entire chapter.
The notes below indicate what you will be held responsible for on the test and final examination.

Due:

Assignment

Getty Extra Credit
For students who went tot he Getty Art Center on 11 November 2009.

Look through your notes.
Write me a response that is at least 300 words.
Your response should be a reflection about what you learned, realized, loved, were dazzled by, etc. at the Getty. Don’t list. Don’t fact me.
Explore what the art made you think or feel. You could decide to focus on two works.
You could decide to focus on one work and the space of the Getty itself.
Expand on your ideas.

Typed; double-spaced; due before you leave for Thanksgiving break.

Due:

Assignment

I have attached the notes as well as the slides from today: Bosch, Bruegel, Mannerism, Palladio.

Keep recording little claims that writers and speakers make about works of art. Those "claims" need to be internalized and then deployed when you are asked to write about a specific work of art--that is not cheating--it is LEARNING.
Eventually, your very own language will come out. Until then, you are trying to learn art criticism "stems" that you can flesh out.
***Maybe that is what we should do on Thursday--make up claims. We could have a contest, and then you could earn extra credit points for each articulate claim you are able to write.

Keep reading the Baroque chapter (chapter 19).

Due:

Assignment

1. Read the handout from Gombrich.

2. Start reading chapter 19 in Stokstad.

3. On Thursday, 19 November 2009, there will be a examination preview credit gathering palloooooooza.
Your examination on Stokstad chapters 17 and 18 will probably be Monday, 30 November.

I know I have not assigned much homework lately; I hoped you used the time to rest, catch up in other classses, or to CATCH up in art history and study.
This is a difficult time of year with all the applications due, etc.
Steady on.....we will get a breather in a week.

And please check in on this website for helpful stuff that I will put up....

Due:

Assignment

See the wiritng assignment below.

Due:

Assignment

Are you done writing?
Ready to think about another comparison?

What should you first ask yourself about each individual work before you start to compare the two?

Due:

Assignment

Due:

Assignment

Yes, presentations do get a little long, but the wonderful thing is that they force us to look for a long time at an individual piece of art. Presentations force us to SLOW DOWN and really look.
During a presentation, you should of course be taking notes, but you should also be engaging your brain and trying to make connections. Ask yourself: "what distinctive characteristics do I see in this specific work?" Challenge yourself to articulate what you see and to conect what you see to an argument.
Also, make yourself copy over and over the artists' name and the titles of pieces. This copying helps you learn the title and names. There is research in neuroscience that backs me up--I am not just making this stuff up.

That said, all the slides are fair game for a slide identificiation quiz up to Piero della Francesca and Ghirlandaio.
See below for all the slides.

Also. work on your notes. More are coming on Wednesday.

See the word documents below.
Keep reading chapters 17 and 18 in Stokstad; there is a great deal of information to digest.
Also, consider reading cjapters 19-22 in Gardner.

Also, see if the links below work. The point would be for you to watch The Medici Pope and Power vs. Truth on your computer on your own time. Why bother? Well, these videos help to put the work sof art is a historical perspective. And if I say "patron," you should most certainly shout "MEDICI!"

Assignment

Presentations Start.

•Presentations will start on Friday; your presentation will be graded.
•You must provide the entire class with a typed handout. (If you drop it off by 7:30 a.m. on Friday, I can make copies for you. You will need 30 copies.)
•You must let me know by Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. what images you will need to project.
•You are not limited to your assigned images, if you believe other images by the same artist will help you teach the artist and his work. Web Gallery-- http://www.wga.hu/ --is a terrific resource for images.

What must you do?
Teach the artist and the work of art by answering these questions:
Who is the artist?
What is the date of this work?
What medium has the artist used to create this work of art?
What do we notice about the form (the line, the color, the texture, the spatial attributes, the composition)?
What do we notice about the content?
What do we notice about the style? What specific characteristics does this work exemplify?

Did any of these topics or issues affect the production of this work of art?
• class
• religion
• politics
• patronage (who commissioned the work?)
• the intended audience
• the intended function of the work

And to sum up, be able to explain: Why is this particular work of art significant?

Due:

Assignment

I have attached the edited answers to the Identification portion of the Examination on chapters 14, 15, and 16.

Here's the thing: future exams will contain a similar section. So think about how you can "learn" these identifications. Think about what you did not know and why.
Moreover, please review these slides: I promise that many will reappear on the December final exam.

Also, as a bonus for those of you who actually check this site like you are supposed to, see below for the quiz I was going to give you in class on Wednesday. We ran out of time. But it is already made, and I might spring it on you as a warm up.

Finally--review what "we" wrote on the board. Read it to yourself.
It is a model paragraph about art.
There is a claim based on historical information about the socioeconomic context of 1474-1476 that is then back by visual evidence from the actual work. A tight, articulate paragraph like this is in your future.
Think about what you might claim. What you might argue.

Your homework:

1. Go over the answers to part two of the test carefully. I have uplaoded the slides and the snaswers, I cannot emphasize enough the fact that YOU WILL SEE SOME OF THESE QUESTIONS AGAIN.

2. Complete the pages 1-2 of the notes I handed out today.
Complete pages 1 through the top of two of the notes I handed out last week on art in Italy.
You never know when you will have a quick ATTACK QUIZ on background information you should have already learned.
I will upload both copies of notes below.

3. Review the rest of the slides and the questions about the Adoration of the Sheperds. Again, you never know when I might expect you to write something articulate about a piece of art you have had the opportunity to study.

4. Start preparing your presentation. See the assignment sheet below in case you don't know or forgot your assigned artist and pieces.

Due:

Assignment

I typed up (and edited) the notes that I was taking as your classmates (holy Cow Alec!! what eloquence!) discussed the Sacrifice of Isaac. Please review these notes. They are a good model of what I expect from you in terms of writing about individual works of art.

Nice "look" Chris at the left foot stepping forward.
Nice job--I forgot--about the fearful hunched body! Remind next class of who saw that....

Due:

Assignment

I sure hope you read carefully....and reviewed the slides from this past week.
Also, make sure you think about whether you like Cosimo Medici's mushroom hat best or whether you prefer the Fried Egg Shape lozenge hat of the Albizinni's (sp?)--the bad guys.
I'll know if you are checking this site by whether or not you offer an opinion.
I already know what Ms. Tang will prefer..... :)

Due:

Assignment

Please read the first half of chapter 17 in Stokstad pages 616-649.
You have already read about the Renaissance in Italy--now read about the Renaissance in Northern Europe--which is very different.

Pay attention to how the northern artists utilize atmospheric perspective.

Due:

Assignment

Keep reading pages 649 to 681 in Stokstad.
Read chapter 21 in Gardner if you really want to impress yourself and dive into the Renaissance in Florence. I think Gardner is much more readable at times...try him out....

Start memorizing the big works.
And may--just maybe--take some notes or make some flashcards.

I am attaching the notes and slides from today.
You should be able to thoughtfully discuss perspective now.

Please also think about patronage. The Medici's are the most famous patrons of ALL TIME. They supported (commissioned art from) all the most famous artists of the Renaissance. They used this art to decorate their Medici chapels and Medici palaces.

Due:

Assignment

Read pages 649 to 681 in Stokstad.

"Stuff" to think about...see attachment for something nicely formatted.

7 October 2009
AP Art History

Some big ideas from class today….

What is the political purpose of a work of art?
Think about these three works:

The Bayeux Tapestry ca. 1076

the fresco cycle in the Sala dei Nove, Palazzo Pubblico, Siena 1338-1340
artist: Ambrogio Lorenzetti
Allegory of Good Government
Effects of Good Government on the City Life
Effects of Good Government in the Countryside

the three panel paintings commemorating the Battle of San Romano made for the Medici Palace 1450’s
artist: Paolo Uccello
Niccolò da Tolentino Leads the Florentine Troops
Bernardino della Ciarda Thrown Off His Horse
Micheletto da Cotignola Engages in Battle

An argument for the justness of William the Conqueror becoming the king of England; an argument about the qualities of a good government and how a good government can positively affect a city state; and finally, an argument about……how cool linear perspective is when used to decorate a wall….or simply how “cool” we Florentines are when we defeat our archrival Siena—they stink!!!—we are the best EVER!!!!
(The last one is not really a joke……I think it is pretty close to the truth.)

Important Ideas and Phrases

Medieval: a God’s Eye view of the world
Renaissance: a “human’s eye” view of the world

Giotto: was the first to powerfully and successfully model the human form using patches of tone (or light and dark shading) instead of line

Paolo Uccello: was one of the first to successfully render linear perspective (one vanishing point)

When you look at a religious image, ask yourself:
What is the purpose of this religious image? Am I supposed to be transported spiritually? Am I supposed to meditate on this celestial figure?
Or am I supposed to connect with the humanity of the heavenly figure? Am I supposed to learn the story? Am I supposed to see how closely my life (and the things I do) is connected to their life (and the things that they did)?

Due:

Assignment

More images to review for the test on chapters 14-16.
You will need Microsoft "powerpoint."

Due:

Assignment

Here is more to review.
Yes....I do want to absolutely fill your head up with images.
And yes, I expect a great deal from you.
If you weren't reading about art, just imagine what kind of silly reruns or football games you would be watching on television!!
