The English Department at Orange Glen High School is dedicated to offering a rigorous curriculum rich in both fiction and nonfiction in order to prepare students to be both career and college competitive. During their course of study at OGHS, students engage in multiple learning experiences that actively incorporate the necessary components of the California State Standards: Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening.  With an emphasis on skills mastery, students work to improve their analytical, writing, and research skills through the use of technology while also applying their knowledge to real world applications.

Literary texts to be studied along with poetry, short stories, nonfiction, and an emphasis on research & communications include: Night, A Long Way Down, with Honors extensions such as: Lord of the Flies, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, A Long Way Gone

English 11

Advanced Placement Language and Composition

Core texts for AP Language and Composition include, but are not limited to: Outliers, Nickel and Dimed,  and Between the World and Me.

English 11 College Prep

Literary texts are studied along with poetry, short stories, rhetoric, nonfiction, memoir, and an emphasis on research. Class texts include The Great Gatsby, The Things They Carried, A Raisin in the Sun, Fahrenheit 451, and The Glass Castle.

English 12

Advanced Placement Literature and Composition

Literary texts to be studied along with poetry and short stories include, but are not limited to: Oedipus Rex, Macbeth, Hamlet, Frankenstein, 1984, Invisible Man, No Exit, The Heart of Darkness, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Crime and Punishment.

Expository Reading and Writing Course, ERWC

The curriculum for ERWC is created by the CSU system and is heavily concentrated in rhetoric and designed to prepare seniors for academic literacy needed to begin college. Core literary texts aside from nonfiction include: Into the Wild, 1984 and/or Brave New World, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
